B2B Client Project w/ CNC Technologies

Overview:

Over a three-week project, our remote team collaborated with CNC Technologies to enhance the user experience and functionality of their product website, CNC.Live. CNC Technologies is a leading aviation technology and wireless communications company serving the law enforcement, government, and military sectors. The CNC.Live website provides a secure interface for agencies to access helicopter, fixed-wing, and UAV footage from any internet-connected device.

Research:

Our team consisted of four designers, each assigned specific roles for the project. We began by conducting a comprehensive website audit to understand the site's purpose, color schemes, and existing features. Our analysis revealed that CNC.Live primarily served as a platform for users to stream aerial security footage, organize special events, and allow administrators to manage agency personnel.

To gather insights into the needs and challenges of CNC.Live users, I conducted user surveys and interviews. With a list of current clients provided by CNC Technologies, I was able to gain valuable information regarding user requirements. This research allowed us to identify key issues and develop effective solutions.

Through our research, we discovered that users did not encounter significant issues with the CNC.Live website. However, their primary desire was to have a dedicated mobile app that provided the same information as the website, without the need to go through a mobile browser and repeatedly log in. With stakeholder approval, we proceeded with developing an Android-based mobile app.

Design:

After establishing user flows and sitemaps for the mobile app, our team sketched out various layout options. Through a collaborative voting process, we selected the best layout and incorporated ideas from the entire team. This approach ensured that the final design reflected the collective input and considerations of the team.

Usability Testing:

To identify any pain points or issues in the design, usability testing was conducted. Five users participated in the test, completing four tasks related to logging in, creating events, navigating the dashboard, and accessing analytics for streaming towers. Metrics such as task completion time and the number of mistakes were tracked during the test.

Tasks:

  • Task: Log in as a normal user
  • Task: Create an event and set it to private with sharing
  • Task: Navigate back to the dashboard
  • Task: Access the analytics page and view details for tower 1

Metrics:

During the usability test, we tracked the following metrics:

  • Number of mistakes made by users during the tasks
  • Time taken by each user to complete the tasks

Our target was for users to complete each task within 2 minutes without any mistakes.

Findings:

The usability testing revealed that users were able to successfully log in, create events, and navigate the dashboard without difficulty. However, users faced challenges in locating the analytics page for streaming towers, indicating confusion in the user interface. These findings provided valuable insights for design iterations.

Iterations and Mock-Up:

Based on the usability testing findings, our team made design iterations to address user concerns. Improvements focused on clarifying verbiage and enhancing the intuitiveness of the analytics icon. By incorporating these changes, we aimed to improve the overall user experience and address the issues identified during testing.

Retrospective:

Working on this project highlighted the importance of user-centered design. Our client had preconceived ideas for improving their website but lacked UX research to support their reasoning. As the project manager, I guided the client towards understanding the importance of considering user needs.

To address this, our team focused on creating an app that catered to user needs while incorporating the client's desired features. User feedback and testing were conducted to validate these features. Through an iterative design process, we incorporated user feedback and ensured that design decisions were grounded in user needs and preferences.

Conclusion:

Through collaboration with CNC Technologies, we successfully enhanced the user experience and functionality of the CNC.Live website and developed a dedicated mobile app. Our user-centered design approach, supported by extensive research and usability testing, ensured that the final solutions aligned with user needs and preferences. The project resulted in an improved platform for agencies to access aerial security footage, manage events, and communicate effectively.
